ACCOMMODATIONS

Many accommodations offer a discounted “off-season” rate to fill vacancies during this slow season. Pair that with getting away on the less-busy weekdays and you’ve got a win/win situation! Since most people take getaways on weekends, hotels often have discounted mid-week packages. By investing a few minutes of research, you’ll reap some super savings. Check out our DEALS for winter’s best rates. Or, go directly to the website of your desired accommodation, where their package deals are listed in detail. For example, a quick look at HARRISON HOT SPRINGS RESORT SPECIALS finds a great variety of package deals. (And, if you stay at the resort, you’ll find that the pools are divinely peaceful during the week).

HOT SPRINGS

Speaking of hot springs, this subject deserves a mention of its own. We think winter is one of the most incredible times to enjoy the luxurious hot springs at Harrison Hot Springs Resort. When the winter air is crisp and biting, there’s nothing quite like the blissful sensation of sinking back into soothing warm mineral waters. And if you are in the pools when there is a blanket of snow around you, or delicate snowflakes gently falling; it’s pure enchantment to experience. You’ll never have to worry that the water will feel too hot, as there are three outdoor and two indoor pools kept at different temperatures; choose what suits you best. Not staying at the Resort? Don’t worry: there’s an indoor PUBLIC HOT SPRINGS pool accessible to all, with the same healing mineral water that’s used in the Resort pools. Kept at a perfectly temperate +38C, the mineral waters will soothe your aches and pains. The public pool building also features soaring windows with a seating area that looks out toward Harrison lake, so you can soak and then sit back, relax, and watch the world go by. And, of course, during weekdays, the pool is peaceful. The public pool is open seven days a week: Sunday to Thursday, 9am to 8pm, and Friday - Saturday, 9am-9pm

DINING

What’s the benefit of dining midweek? Your favorite café, restaurant, or pub will be less busy during the week, especially during the winter season. This equates to no line-ups, speedy service and a lovely ambience. It’s much more pleasant to talk over lunch without a clattering of plates and cacophony of voices around you. Another plus: eateries usually offer weekday specials to draw people in.

ATTRACTIONS

Believe it or not, even in winter, there are loads of activities to enjoy in the area. Although some attractions can get busy on weekends, during the week, you’ll have lots of room to roam. Bring some excitement and colour to a grey winter day by enjoying these fun winter attractions:

STARLIGHT SKATING RINK
This brand new, synthetic ice rink is a fantastic addition to Harrison’s winter waterfront! With no worry of melting ice, the rink stays in pristine condition no matter the weather. Bring your skates and take a glide! If you don’t have skates, you can rent some for a small fee. Admission to the rink is free, and it’s open from 10am to 9pm daily until February 29.

SASQUATCH MOUNTAIN RESORT
Offering skiing, snowboarding, tubing, a terrain park and guided or unguided snowshoe tours, Sasquatch Mountain Resort is located a short distance from the village. Brand new this season is their Sasquatch Quad Chair Lift. The benefit of visiting the resort during weekdays is a substantial discount on lift tickets! Their “early-week” (Monday-Wednesday) lift tickets are a bargain, plus they also offer discount days such as “2 for 1 Tuesdays” on lift tickets. If you’re new to skiing, you’ll love learning during the weekdays when the hills are less populated and there’s loads of room to zoom.

LIGHTS BY THE LAKE
Running November 23 - January 12, this dazzling holiday light display is a must-see! One kilometre of the lakefront promenade is alight with sparkling color, turning the lakefront into a captivating holiday wonderland. Pose in the many selfie-stands and capture your perfect Instagram photo.

NATURAL WONDERS
Winter is a great time to watch for bald eagles that congregate in the area (especially around Harrison Mills) to feast on spawning salmon. The Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival happens in November, but the eagles hang around in droves anywhere from October to January.

HARRISON ECO TOURS
Check out the bald eagle/fish viewing tours all winter long. The salmon also attract other wildlife to the area: late fall/early winter is a good time to spot bears along the river as they feast before hibernation. Seals will also make an appearance as they swim in the river in search of fish. And, if hiking or driving around the Harrison Valley in the winter, watch for an icy natural wonder: if the temperatures remain below freezing for long enough, local waterfalls turn into magical ice castles!

One final tip: if you’re booking a winter getaway, it’s a great idea to book a room with a fireplace. After a day out and about enjoying the local attractions, it is heavenly to sit in front of a roaring fireplace with a hot chocolate and a great book!
